A few days go I got in a heated argument about Southern Hip Hop not having as many Lyricists as northern hip hop . There were couple things that disturbed me about this argument.

One what do you consider a lyricist?

Often I hear people used this word to really state preference of content than wordplay ability. No matter if we like someone’s subject matter we can not deny the fact of someone being able to put together metaphors, similes, puns, alliteration, double entendre and etc. Even, with artists that we consider lyrical. It more the narrative of their content we enjoyed that trump over other artists that some consider discuss “tired’ topics but have more wordplay. With that being said I think it always cool to state what you consider lyricism first because I could point you out a 2Chainz verse where his couplet style of rhyming and metaphors come very close to exact rhymes or a lyrical game of horse as we may have experience in Kanye West, Mos Def, and Freeway song “2words”. Both these feats are not easy to do, ask any writer.

Two, How are you consuming music?

If you look to radio still or music video channels to discover what is fresh, relevant aka poppin right now. You have accomplish an epic fail. With internet and blogging culture at a high. People are gravitating to things that pop on their news and blog feeds or participating in sites like soundcloud for music. Music have become more internet base that these traditional markets are only competing by making their content more internet based. However, radio and music networks are still pretty popular platform to provide so many artists’ music longer shelf life because they are the default. But they do not dictate what is now and what artists are getting good exposure to the masses. Which have made labels and even major labels start putting out singles on soundcloud before it even get on radio. Therefore, countless times artists are on these major music platforms after having stardom online. Therefore, the music people are listening to is better described by blogs, and other feeds. So, if you are saying so and so is hot and you don’t like that because of what you see on tv or radio your whole perspective is whack and you don’t have a merited argument of what’s popping. I strongly feel if you not going online to check for music in this current time in hip hop you do not know what’s going on in hip hop to speak on it.

Lastly, remember hip hop is as diverse as it listeners. Just because you do not hear something you want from hip hop does not mean it doesn’t exist. It means you have to discover it. Check out a blog, soundcloud, internet radio, youtube, and etc. You have power as a listener to have the music you want to hear. So don’t agrue that you are being spooned feed such and such music. Or you need music like KRS-ONE, Rakim, Kool G RAP etc…well they are steadily putting out music so go listen to their music and stop talking about them like they are dead.

With a big sigh,

Lindo

P.S. the list is of some debatable lyrical southern rappers that currently poppin. I could make it longer.
